SATs reminder

It’s that time of year again, where year 6 pupils across our Primary Academies undertake their key stage 2 tests (known as SATs).

We are well aware that this can be a demanding time for pupils. Therefore, we have put together a “5 elements to SATS success” guide for our pupils and families.

1)      Sleep and recovery:

 As Aristotle puts it “The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” To optimize energy levels for maximum output, sufficient sleep is needed each night. 10-11 year olds should be getting no less than 9 hours of sleep. This will ensure their memory, cognitive ability and energy is the best it can be. A useful tip to ensure your child winds down properly is to remove any electronic devices and prevent your children from undertaking intense physical activity right before bed.

2)      Keep hydrated:

Drink plenty of water: 90% of our brain is water. We cannot afford to be dehydrated even at 2% as this reduces brain performance. Furthermore, water intake can increase the level of oxygen the brain receives, thus increasing the speed of the brain by 14%. Crucial for critical thinking!

3)      Feed your body with nutrition

Minerals, vitamins and nutrients are required for pupils to perform to their potential. From carbohydrates to protein to healthy fats, the body needs all three macro nutrients as well as minerals and vitamins. So adopting a healthy well balanced diet with plenty of vegetables and natural foods will impact their output in the best way possible.

Get the best start – eat breakfast – this is probably the most important meal of the day. Things like porridge, Weetabix and brown toast, will help your body to burn energy slowly and steadily.

4)      Stay active:

It is very important to stay active. Whether it is sports, dancing, or any other form of exercise, the idea is to get their whole body moving to increase blood flow and strengthen the interconnections within the nerve cells.

5)      The right mind-set:

Think positive – believe in yourself and you will do great.
